Aside from energy costs and the HST, you also pointed to hikes in payroll taxes (WSIB) and the minimum wage as having had the biggest impact. Accordingly, you asked CFIB to convey to the politicians the issues that will be most important to how you cast your ballot in October.

Due to the economic downturn, the Employment Insurance (EI) account was in a multi-billion dollar deficit that could have been avoided had a surplus of $57 billion not been spent on other priorities. To deal with this deficit, the government planned to increase EI rates to their maximum levels - $0.15 for employees per $100 of earnings and $0.21 for employers - over the next three years.

For a document billed as, Ontario’s Plan for Jobs and Growth, there was little to nothing for small businesses in the recent Ontario Budget. The half-hearted 8-year plan to balance the budget will increase the provincial debt to nearly $270 billion by 2014; up from $193 billion today.
