Show your support for the credit/debit Code of Conduct

Thanks to the help and our members support in filling out more than 30,000 fax alerts, we are happy to report that the Federal government has accepted much of CFIB’s proposed voluntary Code of Conduct for the credit and debit card industry.  This is a significant development as many of the same bad and costly practices we’ve seen with credit cards are slated to expand to debit cards in the months ahead.

Over the next few weeks, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is consulting on the proposed Code of Conduct. The code would:

  • Ensure  more transparency and disclosure of information regarding the cost of transactions
  • Provide proper notice provisions to merchants about contract changes, with the right to exit without penalties
  • Allow issuing  premium cards only on request
  • Allow merchants to offer a variety of cash discounts
  • Enable merchants to control how transactions are routed

Wallet of Mystery

CFIB has prepared a short video explaining some of these issues. Please take a moment to watch the video and send it to friends and colleagues. Let’s get the word out!

Show Minister Flaherty your support for the Code of Conduct by signing and sending him CFIB’s fax alert.
