Action Alert - TTC
"Make the TTC an Essential Service!"
The recent public sector strikes in Windsor and Toronto are key examples of “when the right to strike is wrong.” As
it stands, taxpayers are routinely held hostage by public sector unions that enjoy a monopoly on the provision of
public services that we pay for; add to the list last year’s TTC strike in Toronto and the OC Transportation fiasco in Ottawa.
Building on our previous work, CFIB was the only business group that did not shy away from going after politicians and unions during these most recent labour disputes. Backed by member feedback, CFIB launched a strike action ampaign that included radio clips, open letters, online Action Alerts, and a member fax campaign that all generated enormous media and public interest; and also allowed us to highlight the sweetheart contracts that civil servants enjoy on the public dime! CFIB’s most recent Wage Watch study revealed that government and extended public sector employees are paid roughly 8 to 17 per cent more than their same-job counterparts in the private sector; this figure jumps to as much as 30 per cent when benefits are included.

Thanks to our research and tremendous member support, we were able to heighten public awareness of this gap in Windsor and Toronto. While progress was made to eliminate some of these extravagant benefits, however, the final settlements continue to demonstrate the need to keep the spotlight on public sector wages/benefits and a system that continues to reward a select few.
