How Many is Too Many?
A comparative analysis of journeyperson-to-apprentice ratios across Canada
Will the Ontario Government's Bill 183 and its new College of Trades make it easier for small businesses to hire more apprentices? It seems doubtful. Here is why -
- Small Business experience with self-regulating agencies, like the proposed College of Trades, is not positive.
- Current apprenticeship ratios are grossly unfair - Ontario's small employers and apprentices are not treated the same as their counterparts in other provinces.
- No criteria for the selection of the Appointments Council. Will the small business voice continue to be pushed aside by Big Union and Big Business as it is now?
- New Membership Fees are nothing more than a tax on workers and employers.
- Training costs are already a major challenge for small firms. Nothing in Bill 183 will help them to overcome this challenge.
