Trade without Borders
A small business report card on the Canada/US border
Even as businesses are encouraged to move into new markets, the USA remains Canada’s largest and most important trading partner. Given some major events of the last decade (9/11, BSE, SARS), it has become more difficult to trade across the Canada/US border as lawmakers in both countries try to balance security concerns with the need to keep the border ‘open’.
With about half of Canada’s small business owners trading goods and/or services with the USA, their experiences at the border can have an impact on how they do business today and in the future. Based on more than 6,000 responses, this report offers mixed results from Canadian small business owners about their experiences with border agencies on both sides of the border. It also offers policy makers practical recommendations on how to make trade and border processes more small-business friendly.
