Changes to the Employment Standards Act now in effect

Since a review in 2006, organized labour has lobbying hard for drastic changes to PEI's employment standards, including expensive reductions to the standard work week and additional statutory holidays. CFIB has been at the forefront making sure that our members' voices are heard and working to minimize any negative impacts for Island businesses and their employees.

Government has made several changes that will came into effect on October 1, 2010:

Vacation and Vacation Pay: Employees are entitled to 2 weeks vacation or 4% vacation pay for employees with 1 to 8 years of continuous service; employees with 8 or more years of continuous service are now entitled to 3 weeks vacation or 6% vacation pay.

Sick Leave: After 5 years of work, employees are now eligible for 1 paid sick day per year

Bereavement Leave: All employees are entitled to 1 day of paid leave and up to 2 consecutive days of unpaid leave for the death of an immediate family member; for the death of an extended family member, employees are entitled to unpaid leave of up to 3 days

Banking of Hours: Overtime hours (anything above the standard work week) can be banked for time off at 1.5 hours for every hour worked. Time off must be taken within 3 months of being earned.
