Small business is Big Business on PEI

 

Did you know that 97.7% of businesses on Prince Edward Island have fewer than 50 employees? Or that self-employment on the Island grew last year? The Small Business Profile: An Overview of PEI's Small and Mid-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) is designed to answer these common questions about the Island business community - and how it's changing.

Some key facts from the report:

97.4%: The percentage of businesses on PEI considered small and medium

10,200: The number of self-employed individuals which has grown over the years and represents a significant percentage of total employment in our province;

$500,000: Ceiling for revenue earned by most SMEs;

33%: The percentage of total workers on PEI that small firms with fewer than 50 employees employ;

50%: 5-year survival rate for SMEs in most sectors;

800: The number of jobs created in the self-employed sector in 2008-09.
