Canadian small businesses pay among the highest credit card processing fees in the world.
Fees to process credit cards are about 1.5 to 3% of the sale.
Fees for "premium" credit cards, like Visa Infinite or MasterCard World Elite are even higher.
Processing fees for a $400 set of snow tires could be up to $12 - but would be less than 12 cents if a customer paid with Interac.
While merchants pay 100% of the cost of credit card processing fees, they are eventually imbedded in the cost of all products or services.
Some MasterCards carry extra merchant fees that are completely hidden from merchants they receive their monthly statements.
