BC Government News Release
In response to the growing concern from BC's small business owners regarding local government spending, and to the work done by CFIB, the BC government has introduced legislation creating the Office of the Auditor General for Local Government.
This is a major victory for BC's small businesses. CFIB's 10,000 members in this province tell us the cost of local government is driving unmanageable tax increases for them. CFIB, with support from our members, played a major role in the creation of this legislation. Countless meetings with government officials, two written submissions and ongoing municipal research have led to this first of its kind legislation.
An Office of the Auditor General for Local Government will enhance the accountability of municipal governments. While municipalities have their financial statements audited each year (in other words "did the money get spent?"), very few have ever done a true value for money audit (in other words "did the taxpayers get good value for the money spent?").
Establishing an independent Office of the Auditor General for Local Government is an important step that will encourage all municipalities to focus on providing best value for the tax dollars they collect. Further, an Office of the Auditor General for Local Government can help share best practices among different municipal governments.
