Finding a better balance

Small business owners pay more than their fair share of municipal property taxes. In fact, according to our latest research report, 250 of Alberta's 349 municipal governments (or 72 per cent) are charging higher rates of property tax on commercial properties compared to residential properties of the same value. The mill rate on commercial property was, on average, nearly double (1.9 times) higher. But for municipalities with at least 5,000 people, the gap was 2.37 times more.

If Alberta wants to remain a small business friendly province, municipal governments must find a far more fair and equitable balance between the commercial and residential share of property taxes.
