Small business confidence lagging

No doubt, small business owners in the North are a hard-working and resilient bunch. Unfortunately, confidence levels among small business owners in the North continues to page behind the rest of the country. According to CFIB's Business Barometer Index, for the period of May 2010 to May 2011, confidence among small business owners in NWT was 65 points, just slightly ahead of 64.3 in the Yukon, but behind the national average of 67.1. The western provinces led the pack. In particular, Alberta has the highest confidence level of any province or territory over the one-year period at 70.8.

About the Business Barometer Index: Business Barometer is a monthly publication by CFIB and is a registered trademark. Measured on a scale between 0 and 100, an index level above 50 means owners expecting their businesses' performance to be stronger in the next year outnumber those expecting weaker performance. According to past results, index levels normally range between 65 and 75 when the economy is growing. The finding are collected from a stratified random sample of CFIB members responding to a controlled-access web survey.
