Pushing for red tape relief in Yellowknife
While there is no silver bullet solution to the labour shortages facing small business in NWT, one part of the solution is for all levels of government to commit to reducing the burden of red tape so owners and staff have more resources to dedicate to the business and customers.
Red tape relief in Yellowknife

Richard Truscott, Director of Alberta and NWT, meets with Mayor Gordon Van Tighem to discuss red tape relief in Yellowknife
There are at least two practical ways the Yellowknife government could assist entrepreneurs. The first would be to join BizPaL - an online resource that allows entrepreneurs to access all permit and license requirements from all three levels of government. BizPaL is an Industry Canada project in partnership with provincial, territorial, municipal governments. It provides one-stop access to all permit and license information required by all levels of government and helps new entrepreneurs start up faster.
The second would be to develop a single territorial business license, similar to the one used in the Yukon. This would be very well received by small business, particularly mobile contractors such as electricians, plumbers and carpenters. We are very supportive of this concept and would like to see it expanded to every municipality in NWT. It is a good example of how government and private sector can work together to improve services to entrepreneurs.
