Tuesday, September 6, 2011, the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) director of provincial affairs, Bradley George, in signing a proclamation that declares 2011 as Year of the Entrepreneur.

2011 Year of the Entrepreneur

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development signs proclamation declaring 2011 as Year of the Entrepreneur with Bradley George, Director of Provincial Affairs for CFIB

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada adopted a recommendation from CFIB, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF), celebrating its 15th anniversary, in declaring 2011 Year of the Entrepreneur, nation-wide.  Since then, seven other provinces have made similar declarations.

With the signing of this proclamation, the provincial government is formally acknowledging the valuable contribution that small business plays in our province.  Our entrepreneurs are the heart and soul of our provincial economy.  They are not only job creators, but are also leaders within their communities.

Soon after the provincial government's proclamation, St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe agreed that the City of St. John's should make a similar declaration. We were then invited to attend a council meeting on September 19th, where the mayor signed a proclamation, declaring 2011 as Year of the Entrepreneur in the City of St. John's.  We also had an opportunity to address Council on the importance of entrepreneurship in the city.

Small businesses account for 97 per cent of all business in Newfoundland and Labrador and we give credit to both the provincial government and the City of St. John's for recognizing the major contributions of entrepreneurs who drive employment and the economy.
