Business confidence up in Prince Edward Island

Business confidence among Prince Edward Island's small business owners has had a slight increase in September. CFIB's national Business Barometer® Index came in at 63.2 last month. The slight increase in September's confidence levels makes up for some of the ground lost during the 2011 calendar year, which had peaked in February. The index of business performance from our monthly survey is in line with last year's levels with some improvement.

Among the Atlantic provinces Prince Edward Island's business confidence levels were second highest in the region. Newfoundland and Labrador surveyed the highest at 67.4, while Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were 60.8 and 59.4 respectively.

All of this is outlined in the attached Business Barometer for September 2011. The barometer reports on small business expectations and business confidence.

The following are some provincial findings of note:

  • The September index for Prince Edward Island was 63.2 which is slightly higher than the national index of 62.7;
  • 45 per cent of businesses in PEI now say the overall state of business is good, 31 per cent say is it satisfactory, 24 per cent say it is bad, and;
  • Significant concerns over fuel and energy costs, along with wage costs, and the tax burden continue to dog PEI business owners.
