Workers’ compensation boards under the microscope

We recently met with Winston Maharaj, the new President and CEO of Manitoba's WCB, and Alice Sayant, VP, Assessments to discuss your priorities for a more small business friendly WCB.

A safe work environment and having a good plan for covering workplace injuries is a priority for everyone so it is critical that Workers' compensation boards are well run. CFIB has undertaken a nation-wide study on all the provincial/territorial workers' compensation boards. The main goal of this research is to provide a thorough comparative analysis on all the main elements of the workers' compensation boards, from the perspective of SMEs. The research shows that although Manitoba's WCB scored well in the categories of cost of premiums, experience rating and long-term financial sustainability, it's evident Manitoba's Board has some work to do as it scored poorly in coverage, classification and assessment, claims management, customer service and received the second-lowest score overall.

This research is a unique undertaking, given that it encompasses 35 indicators in seven major areas of workers' compensation:

  • cost of premiums
  • claims management
  • experience rating
  • classification and assessment
  • coverage
  • long-term fiscal sustainability
  • customer service
