Controlling Red Tape for the Long Haul
A Foundation for Unleashing Entrepreneurship in Canada
In our report titled: Controlling Red Tape for the Long Haul: A Foundation for Unleashing Entrepreneurship in Canada, CFIB provides practical suggestions to create long term red tape reduction in order to support Canadian entrepreneurs.
Time and money spent on red tape is time and money not spent growing a business, training employees, hiring, serving customers or enjoying family. The smaller the business, the more likely it is that the owner is the one ensuring compliance, drawing him or her from the important tasks of running the business. Every minute businesses spend adhering to red tape is a drag on Canadian productivity and prosperity with no corresponding benefits.
We have estimated the annual cost of regulation to businesses in this country at $30.5 billion. Small business owners think this cost could be reduced by between 10-25 per cent without sacrificing the public interest goals of health and safety. This effectively means that eliminating needless rules and improving government customer service could deliver the equivalent of a $3-7.5 billion stimulus package each and every year. Increased productivity, more jobs, and higher wages would result.
