Wanted: Government Vision for Small Business

A survey of CFIB members reveals dramatic differences from province to province in how small business owners perceive their provincial governments’ vision to support entrepreneurship. Wanted: Government Vision for Small Business also examines Canadian entrepreneurs’ perception of their provincial governments’ as pertains to other factors that affect the business climate. 

Highlights of the report: 

  • Only 23% of Canadian small business owners are confident their provincial government has a vision that supports small business.
  • Nationally, 45% of small businesses report they would likely recommend starting a business in their province.
  • Only 9% of small business owners in Canada believe their Premier understands the realities of running a small business.
  • 59% of Canadian small business owners say provincial taxes discourage them from growing their business.

Overall, businesses in Saskatchewan are the most confident that their provincial government has a vision that supports entrepreneurship.  British Columbia and Alberta ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively in terms of confidence.  Quebec and Manitoba (tied for last in the rankings), had only 8% of respondents expressing confidence in their government’s vision to help small businesses succeed.
