Allstream-CFIB partnership not renewed

After over 15 years of partnership with Allstream (previously AT&T Canada), CFIB has chosen to end the Allstream Privilege Program. Here are answers to some questions you may have.

When did the partnership end?
January 20th 2015.

Why did CFIB end the relationship?
The offers made by Allstream did not provide, in CFIB’s opinion, sufficient value to warrant continuation of the agreement.

+What does this mean to you?

Here are a few possible scenarios:

You are currently using Allstream services whose rates were discounted for CFIB members (such as business lines, ADSL Internet, long distance, etc.)

AND

Upon joining Allstream as a CFIB member, you did not already have a term contract with them.

  • You are not on a term contract for these services.
  • Allstream should not increase your pricing without notifying you in advance.
  • You are free to leave Allstream without penalty.

You are currently using Allstream services whose rates were discounted for CFIB members (such as business lines, ADSL Internet, long distance, etc.)

AND

You were an existing Allstream client, on a term contract, prior to signing up for the CFIB discount.

  • Allstream should not increase your pricing without notifying you in advance.
  • If the original term contract is still in effect, an exit penalty will apply if you decide to leave Allstream. Examine the terms of your agreement and, if required, give Allstream appropriate notice in order to avoid its automatic renewal.
  • If the original term contract was up for renewal while you were benefiting from the CFIB discount, in our opinion, that contract did NOT automatically renew. You should be free to leave Allstream without penalty.
You are currently using Allstream services that were NOT discounted for CFIB members (PRI, SIP trunking, IP telephony, high-end Internet services, etc.)

All the terms you agreed to with Allstream will apply. Such services were never part of the Allstream Privilege Program.
You are not currently an Allstream client. If you choose to become an Allstream client, your CFIB membership does NOT procure any benefit with Allstream. You’ll be subject to the terms and conditions you agree to with Allstream.

+Is there an alternate provider recommended by CFIB?
CFIB has a telecommunications partnership with SelectCom.

  • SelectCom’s current offer is competitive and their coverage has increased in recent years.
  • SelectCom has a proven track record of superior customer service.

+What should I do now?

  • If you are satisfied with the services offered by Allstream, you shouldn’t feel compelled to leave them.
  • If an alternate provider, such as SelectCom, makes you a better offer and you decide to leave Allstream, allow that provider to contact Allstream in order to confirm what exit penalty, if any, might apply and get that confirmation in writing (fax or email would suffice) before you switch.
  • If Allstream states that you’re subject to an exit penalty that you deem to be unjustified, if they increase your prices without sufficient notice or if they continue invoicing you after you’ve left them, request assistance from CFIB’s Business Resources department by calling 1 888 234-2232.

Most important: Don’t agree to a term contract!

  • Telecommunications are evolving quickly. A term contract might lock you into a solution that might soon become obsolete and too expensive.
  • This advice also applies to newer services, such as IP telephony (VOIP).
  • Even if the provider promises new technology or significant discounts, wait until you’ve checked what SelectCom can offer without a term agreement, before agreeing to a term contract with any provider.
