CFIB discusses workers’ compensation issues in NWT

CFIB recently met with Dave Grundy, the President and CEO of the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) to discuss employers’ workers’ compensation issues in NWT.

The highlights of our meeting include:

  • Discussing recommendations from CFIB's workers' compensation report: A Small Business Assessment of Workers’ Compensation
  • Raising employers’ concerns regarding the application of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) coverage: While many jurisdictions extend coverage to front line emergency workers, adding coverage to other employee categories could add significant cost without establishing a connection to the workplace.
  • The WSCC’s ongoing efforts to improve customer service for both employers and employees including offering more services online
  • WSCC’s funded position: in 2016 it was 110%, down 7% from 117% in 2015
    • CFIB recommends introducing a formal policy to refund surpluses to employers
