BC business confidence rises as national confidence dips

BC business confidence remains unchanged heading into holiday season

The BC barometer index remained unchanged in November at 67.2 heading into the holiday season (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy). While BC's confidence level is lower than normal, small businesses have remained very stable in a very uncertain economic climate. BC is once again above the national confidence level (63.7) and fourth in confidence to Saskatchewan (74.2), Alberta (71.1) and Manitoba (67.4).

After four straight months of decline the BC Business Barometer® index rose from 63.7 in September to 67.2 in October (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy). This jump in apparent confidence has BC above the national confidence level and 3rd in confidence only to Saskatchewan (73.2) and Alberta (72.2).

Confidence among British Columbia's small- and mid-sized business is continuing to fall since reaching 73.9 high in June. The BC barometer index fell slightly from its level in August at 65.1 to 63.7 in September (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy). Adversely, the national average rose minimally in September, rising from Augusts' 61.7 to 62.7.

The index was at 71.1 in January indicating little change in the confidence of small business during the first quarter of 2011.
