Given the increases in Employment Insurance (EI) in 2011 and 2012, CFIB's top budget request has been for an EI credit for employers to encourage new hiring and offset increasing payroll taxes. We succeeded! Now, firms with up to $10,000 in EI premiums can receive a one-time credit of up to $1,000.

Federal MP Russ Hiebert’s previous union financial disclosure bill (C-317) was reintroduced recently as C-377 due to technical issues. The goal of the bill has not changed – requiring unions to disclose to the public how they spend mandatory union dues. CFIB continues to support this bill and encourages all parties to follow suit.

In 2010, CFIB launched an Employment Insurance (EI) premiums campaign, one of the most comprehensive lobbying campaigns in our history. Though we celebrated a success for 2011, we knew that the battle was not done.

The federal government launched an EI rate setting review to find out how to avoid surpluses or deficits while ensuring that the program breaks even over time. CFIB’s President presented to the panel how EI rate setting can be improved in order to have stable rates.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ministers Stockwell Day and Jim Flaherty; the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is calling on the federal government to reconsider their tentative agreement with some major federal public service unions to increase wages by 5.3 per cent over the next three years.

The debate over how to reform the Employment Insurance (EI) system became an important issue in Ottawa last June, as the Liberals and Conservatives faced off in a showdown that threatened to lead to a summer election. The election was avoided by a last-minute deal to have a blue-ribbon panel of Liberal and Conservative appointees investigate EI issues and report back in the Fall.
