On February 27th, the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) made commitments to improve accountability and service delivery. CFIB is pleased the CFIA has launched a Statement of Rights and Service which outlines producers' rights.

CFIB and its farm members across Western Canada welcomed the Senate's passing of Bill C-18 - Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act. Western Canada producers can now begin developing and implementing marketing strategies for their 2012 wheat and barley. Read more here.

Prairie farmers welcome Western Provinces support of marketing change at the CWB

We are pleased the Ag Ministers from Western Canada announced their support to give producers marketing choice for wheat, durum and barley. In fact, 83 per cent of CFIB farm members agree. It is time the CWB gives farmers the option to market their own wheat and barley just as they do with their pulses and oilseeds. Read more here.

Today, CFIB released its Monthly Agriculture Business Barometer which shows optimism levels among its farm business members has tapered off to an index of 57.4 in June 2011 from February 2011 highs of 67.4 and behind the national business confidence levels of 66.3.

Agriculture ministers have been reviewing business risk management programs since July 2008 and you have said it is time for action. Governments need to make some immediate changes to AgriStability and address the competitive challenges in the agriculture sector.
