CFIB has been tracking business expectations for the past 14 years. Historical CFIB survey results (indexed to 1988=100) are almost identical to GDP growth. Although there is no formal measure of GDP according to firm size, SMEs account for roughly 45% of the total economic output.

The SME share of the employment market has gradually grown over the 1990s, to a high of 55% in 1997. Although the share dipped slightly towards the end of the decade, SMEs remain the dominant force in Canadian labour markets.
