An Overview of Canada’s Small and Mid-sized Enterprises (SME)
Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, including businesses with no employees, represent 97.8 per cent of the total business establishments in Canada. The 53.3 per cent of businesses who have no permanent employees may have contract workers and family members in addition to the owner. Mid-sized businesses with 50 to 499 employees make up 2.1 per cent of total businesses in Canada.
