Local property taxes weighing heavily on small business

  • Local property taxes weighing heavily on small business

What has your city done for you?

Local policy is often outshined by the provincial or federal government. This, however, does not exempt the fact that issues exist at the municipal level.

Property taxes are one of such issues which do not go unnoticed. In fact, our research shows that small businesses pay two, three, or even four times more in property taxes than a resident would pay on the same assessed property.

So yes, businesses pay more; but what else does this mean?

For nearly half of small business owners like you, this means something serious.
Not only are you paying an unfair proportion of property taxes, you’re also likely not receiving adequate services to justify the cost. In fact, 83% of our members either somewhat or strongly disagree with the following statement:

“Over the past three years, the value-for-money in terms of municipal services I receive and municipal taxes/fees I pay has improved”.

But that’s why we’re here. We continue to lobby your local government on fair property taxation to ensure your business is not fronting the bill. If you have any experiences or stories you would like to share with our lobbying team on municipal property taxes, please email us at [email protected] and have your voice heard!
