In August 2017, the Alberta government announced a review of the consumer protection regulations that are currently guided by the Fair Trading Act (FTA).
Service Alberta Minister Stephanie Mclean announced a review into 15 areas including contract-related issues, such as warranties and cancellation rights, shopping-related concerns, such as transparency pricing and reward points, and industry specific issues, such as moving services, debt collection, ticket sales and auto repairs.
CFIB research shows that a majority, 62 per cent, of small business owners believe government regulation and paper burden is a concern to their business.
CFIB will be pushing the government to ensure the changes respect small businesses.
