Energy costs: One of your key concerns
Energy costs remain a key concern for small business owners, as we regularly see in members’ responses to CFIB’s Business Barometer®. Since these costs make up 9.2% of the total operating expenses of an average-sized SME, the concern is not the least bit surprising.

You’ve asked us to help you lower your energy bills. We’ve listened, and have been bringing your concerns to the Régie de l’énergie du Québec, government departments and energy distributors (Hydro-Québec, Gaz Métro, Gazifère, etc.), as well as to all media platforms.

The Régie de l’énergie
The Régie de l'énergie handles energy-related matters. Its members, who are called commissioners, make decisions about the transmission and distribution of electricity, natural gas, and petroleum products. CFIB is the only employers’ organization that regularly advocates before the Régie on behalf of SMEs – and we’ve been doing so since 2001. As a privileged stakeholder recognized by the Régie, we make submissions every year on your behalf regarding a number of files that could affect your energy bills or services.

Working for you!
CFIB is advocating for fair energy prices, the elimination of cross-subsidization, development of competition among available energy sources (e.g., electricity and natural gas), and billing that is simple, effective and stable. We are also asking that energy efficiency programs be better adapted to the realities faced by small businesses.

We are working hard on a number of fronts:

  • Controlling annual rate hikes
  • Reviewing the rate grid
  • Reviewing business security deposits
  • Improving service levels
  • Correcting cross-subsidization
