When we asked small business owners in PEI how they felt about the future of their communities, many felt pretty optimistic and reported many advantages to doing business locally, notably community spirit and local residents who supported their businesses and other start-ups.

When it comes to the challenges experienced in their local communities, many were more pronounced in rural areas. Notably, rural business owners were significantly more likely to report a shrinking workforce and low-quality telecommunications as key challenges facing their local economies.

In many Island communities, amalgamation and annexation have been hot topics.  For small business owners, chief concerns in these discussions are ensuring that the regulatory and tax burden don't increase for their businesses.  In order for bigger to be better, entrepreneurs want to see municipal and provincial leaders focus on finding efficiencies and economies of scale.
