CFIB’s Business Barometer® tracks labour shortages as a constraint on growth in its monthly surveys. For PEI, labour shortages have been persistent since 2009 in both higher- and lower-skilled categories and have been trending upward; however, long-term vacancy rates on the Island remain low relative to other parts of the country.
Finding candidates with the right skills for the job has been cited by small business owners as their most significant struggle. Similarly, many noted the candidates applying for jobs required high levels of training.
