CFIB asks all Senators to vote in favour of Bill C-234 without any amendments

Toronto, November 28, 2023 – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is asking all Senators to reject any proposed amendments and vote in favour of Bill C-234.

If passed, Bill C-234, An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, will exempt natural gas and propane used on farms from the federal carbon tax. Farmers use natural gas and propane, for example, for on-farm grain drying and barn heating and cooling. This Bill is important because it will provide a real and meaningful way to help our farmers protect our food supply and face the increased cost of doing business, including high fuel and energy costs.

This vote is the last step before the bill receives Royal Assent and becomes law. CFIB has been supportive of this bill since it was introduced in February 2022. Unfortunately, the passing of the Bill has been delayed lately at the expense of our farmers.

Bill C-234 passed through the House of Commons with support from the Conservative Party of Canada, the New Democratic Party, the Bloc Quebecois, the Green Party and a few Liberal MPs.

CFIB asks all Senators to respect the Will of the House of Commons and vote in favour of Bill C-234 without amendments and without delay.

—   Jasmin Guénette, Vice-President of National Affairs, CFIB
