CFIB grades Ontario with a second consecutive A- for red tape reduction

Toronto, January 21, 2020 – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) awarded Ontario an A- grade in its 2020 Red Tape Report Card released today, the second day of CFIB’s 11th national annual Red Tape Awareness Week™.

CFIB’s Red Tape Report Card evaluates provincial governments using three stringent criteria: strong political leadership, a comprehensive public measure of regulatory burden, and a clear cap on government rules. It illustrates that regulatory accountability and transparency must be part of the framework for sustainable red tape reduction that withstands the test of time and survives from government to government, regardless of political stripe.

“Two A- grades in a row is a commendable achievement,” said Julie Kwiecinski, CFIB’s director of provincial affairs, Ontario. “We applaud the government for staying the course on reducing unnecessary, excessive and duplicative rules, while working to put in place the right framework to publicly measure progress on their good work and keep future rules in check.”

“Some regulations exist for a good reason, but many others stand in the way of small business success. Red tape can be reduced without compromising health, safety or environmental outcomes,” added Kwiecinski.
