This report identifies the entrepreneurial strengths and weaknesses of 125 communities across the country and ranks them based on 13 business-friendly indicators.
In 2018, Kelowna, takes the top ratings overall among Canada’s large cities followed by four Quebec communities, Sherbrooke,Trois-Rivières, Montreal periphery and Gatineau.
Among mid-sized urban areas, Whitehorse, takes the top spot followed by Winkler, Manitoba. Three centres in Quebec follow up: Victoriaville, Rimouski and Rivière-du-Loup.
What makes an entrepreneurial city?
The report finds that the surest signs of an entrepreneurial hot spot is the presence of a high concentration of entrepreneurs and a high business start-up rate. It is also important that business owners have high levels of optimism and success in their operations. And finally, good public policy is is critical, particularly the presence of supportive local government tax and regulatory policies.
