Federal and provincial government debt, built up over years of deficit spending, imposes huge costs on future generations. Interest payments on that debt and the dollars necessary to pay off the balance keep taxes much higher than they otherwise would have been. The burden, though, differs substantially depending on where one lives.
This Debt Clock provides an up-to-the-second estimate of combined federal and provincial net debt, and how it is distributed per person. Figures are based on most recent budget projections and population data compiled by CFIB.
