As of May 1, 2021, all licensed food premises in Newfoundland and Labrador where food is handled, prepared or manufactured, must have at least one employee with current food safety training present in the business when it is in operation.
Which businesses will need to have approved food safety training?
Which employees must have the training?
At least one employee with food safety training must be present at all times that the premises are in operation. It can be the owner, the operator or a food handler. It is necessary to ensure enough staff are trained to cover all shifts and employee absences.
Where can we access the training?
The government has provided a list of the approved training courses. If a worker has a current food safety training certificate from a provider not on the list, please contact the Department of Health and Community Services at 709-729-3422 or by e-mail at HealthInfo@gov.nl.ca
Note: The SkillsPassNL food safety modules do not provide the in-depth training required by the new regulations.
Where can I get more information?
You can get more information on the new regulations on the government website, by contacting the Department of Health and Community Services at 709-729-3422 or by e-mail at HealthInfo@gov.nl.ca, or by contacting your CFIB Business Counsellor.
