WSIB mandatory coverage in the construction sector

Since January 1, 2013, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) requires independent operators and small business owners in the construction industry to carry WSIB coverage. As of January 1, 2014, any construction businesses that have not registered will face non-compliance charges (up to $25,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations) and will be required to pay retroactive premiums for all of 2013.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  One Executive Officer, who never touches tools can be exempt from WSIB premiums PROVIDED Form 1208 WA is completed and submitted to WSIB.   Additional Executive officers who never touch tools can be classified in rate group 755 at 21¢ per hundred dollars of earnings PROVIDED form 1209 WA is completed and submitted to WSIB.
