Manitoba small businesses can’t take on more expenses!
Did you know that 84% of small business owners in Manitoba say they can’t afford the additional cost of mandatory employer-paid sick days?
The provincial government is currently considering a proposal that would require employers to provide mandatory paid sick days. While this is a well-intentioned move, it could have serious financial consequences for small businesses already struggling to stay afloat.
For example, if 10 paid sick days were mandated, a business with just five employees could face nearly $8,000 in added costs (about $1,582 per employee).
We’ve seen what happened in British Columbia, since they introduced five mandatory paid sick days per employee in 2022, adding what has become one of the largest payroll costs for small businesses. Manitoba businesses simply can’t afford the same hit. CFIB is taking action, and standing up for the hardworking small business owners who keep our communities strong.
The last thing local entrepreneurs need is another government-mandated expense!
Small businesses in Manitoba are already stretched to the limit, with many still working to recover from the past few challenging years.
Mandatory employer-paid sick days would add thousands of dollars in additional costs to Manitoba’s small businesses:
3 paid sick days | 5 paid sick days | 10 paid sick days |
---|---|---|
5 employees: $3,248 | 5 employees: $5,414 | 5 employees: $7,914 |
10 employees: $6,496 | 10 employees: $10,827 | 10 employees: $15,827 |
20 employees: $12,993 | 20 employees: $21,665 | 20 employees: $31,655 |
