New Brunswick's commercial property tax system at risk of getting out of hand!
New legislation from the Holt government proposes to allow municipalities to hike commercial property tax rates beyond the current limit of 1.7× the residential rate.In cities like Fredericton, Moncton, and Bathurst, this could put serious strain on already tight budgets. History shows that when municipalities are allowed to hike rates, most do, and over half max them out, putting serious additional strain on small businesses.
We’ve heard loud and clear from our members: Now is not the time to increase taxes.
We’re calling on the government to keep the fixed property tax multiplier, limit municipal multipliers to 1.5× or less (with a plan to eventually reach 1×), and implement a four-year plan to reduce the provincial portion of property taxes, aiming for zero like Newfoundland and Labrador.
