CFIB response to Ontario’s alcohol retail expansion announcement

Toronto, December 14, 2023 – We applaud Premier Ford and Minister Bethlenfalvy for finally starting to modernize Ontario’s alcohol retail system. Ending the Beer Store monopoly and expanding competition in alcohol retail has always enjoyed strong support from small business owners, and the news is especially welcomed by convenience stores that have been seeking this change for years.

More products on more shelves – especially more locally-made products like craft beer, cider, mixed drinks, and wine – is good for business and good for consumers.

We are particularly pleased that the Ontario government plans to act on CFIB’s long-standing ask to eliminate the 6.1% tax for Ontario wineries selling their products on site.

We look forward to further details and participating in consultations on the plan rollout.
