CFIB Statement on Federal Energy Agreement
Victoria, November 27, 2025 - In response to today’s pipeline and energy agreement between Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, Keyli Leoppky, CFIB Director of Alberta & Interprovincial Affairs, and Ryan Mitton, CFIB Director of Legislative Affairs for British Columbia, issued the following joint statement:
“Small business depends on a strong, reliable energy sector. Today’s agreement is an important first step toward ensuring Canadian resources can move efficiently to market, creating jobs, investment, and stability for communities and entrepreneurs who rely on the energy economy. The true test will be whether elected officials can come together to make this agreement a reality.
“Small businesses in B.C. and Alberta are ready to build, and they want to play an active role in growing Canada’s economy. Not only does the oil and gas sector include thousands of small- and medium-sized businesses that are ready to directly participate in these projects, but many others will see indirect benefits flow to their communities.
“Politicians cannot claim to be on ‘Team Canada’ when it comes to reducing internal trade barriers, only to dig in their heels on the very infrastructure that enables trade. Now more than ever, elected leaders must put aside their differences, finalize this agreement, and demonstrate that Canada can accomplish major projects.
“CFIB research shows that small businesses in both provinces overwhelmingly support major infrastructure projects like the pipeline enabled by today’s agreement. Nine in 10 of Canada’s small businesses believe it is possible to further develop Canada’s energy economy and protect the environment at the same time. An equal number agree that the strength of Canada’s oil and gas industry is important to the whole country.”
