Railway Work Stoppage: What It Means For Your Business
On August 9th, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) decided that a work stoppage at CN and CPKC Railways would not pose a danger to public health and safety. Following this decision, both railways issued a lockout notice, meaning a work stoppage could be in place as soon as 00:01am on August 22nd, 2024, unless a last-minute agreement is reached by the union and employers. Teamsters, Canada’s largest transportation and supply chain union, also issued a strike notice following the railways’ lockout notice.
Many small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) depend on rail services daily and negotiations have been in a deadlock for months, posting a serious threat to the stability of our supply chain.
