Serving You Better – CRA aims to improve services for SMEs

In the fall of 2016, the CRA invited feedback from small- and medium-sized enterprises, accountants, and stakeholders such as CFIB, on how their programs and services could be improved. CFIB has long advocated for the CRA to improve its accountability and accessibility for small business owners.

The results of the consultations have been released, and we’re encouraged by the changes that will help CRA work better with you and your business. Some of these improvements include:

  • Improving CRA’s My Business Account: Making it easier and faster to sign up and improving the information available; for example, how to fix misallocated payments
  • Expanding the Liaison Officer Initiative pilot to allow businesses to request a visit
  • Conducting a pilot for a dedicated phone service for tax preparers who have more complex issues and questions
  • Clarifying the EI contribution rules for family members in their payroll guides
  • Reducing the time it takes to resolve an objection with CRA
  • Improving the audit experience and ensuring consistency through better auditor training and getting feedback directly from small business owners through a post-audit survey

You can find more in-depth information on the proposed changes in the CRA report Serving You Better. CFIB has contacted CRA to verify the implementation dates of these new initiatives, and we will share that information with you once we have it.
