Time for Fair Construction Mitigation in PEI
We know how frustrating it is for small business owners when construction hits their streets. Fewer customers can reach your doors, deliveries get complicated, and it can feel like your business disappears behind barricades and heavy equipment.
Right now, construction projects in PEI are handled on a “best effort” basis. That means whether a business gets support, or not, depends on the municipality and the project. Small businesses are too often left to deal with construction disruptions and costs on their own. That’s not fair, and it’s not sustainable.
That’s why we're taking action. We’ve submitted a proposal to the provincial government calling for a standardized construction mitigation framework that protects small businesses across the Island. Our goal is simple: ensure that businesses are supported, not sidelined, when construction impacts their operations.
Our proposed framework includes:
- Clear communication with businesses before and during construction projects
- Signage and access planning so customers know businesses are open
- Alternative parking solutions wherever possible
- Compensation options when construction severely disrupts sales
While small businesses benefit from completed projects, they need to survive the construction period first and shouldn’t have to shoulder the financial risk of public infrastructure projects alone. Governments plan and approve these projects, and need to plan for the businesses that keep communities vibrant and thriving.
Together, we can make sure PEI businesses don’t get left behind when the scaffolding and barricades go up. We’ll continue to push for fair construction mitigation because strong small businesses mean strong communities.
