In today’s highly competitive environment it is more important than ever for governments to foster a business environment that supports growth and competitiveness. Yet currently, many small business operations are hindered by Canada’s complex regulatory landscape. Notably, food-related businesses are among the most heavily regulated, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) responsible for a significant share of that burden. The CFIA is the federal agency responsible for administering and enforcing food safety and quality standards and regulations.
Business owners understand the important role of the CFIA and want to comply with food safety standards. To ensure this, SMEs need clear regulations, along with consistent and effective support services to help them navigate the rules and regulations applicable to their business.
CFIA Report Card: Assessing Regulatory Burden and Service Delivery for SMEs explores how SMEs interact with the CFIA, assesses the regulatory burden associated with the Agency, and evaluates the quality of customer service it provides. It highlights areas where regulations, service, and communication can be improved. The impact of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) and the role of the CFIA in facilitating interprovincial trade are also addressed.
