CFIB is aware that a party with malicious intent has posted that it has a CFIB membership list available for sale. As CFIB takes the security of our member data very seriously, we immediately began an investigation into this claim together with our security partner. Our preliminary investigation has revealed that this list was not CFIB membership data, but a prospecting list of Canadian small business owners with largely publicly available information. No private data appears to be part of this list of basic information on Canadian businesses.

CFIB’s investigation will continue and all required reporting and notifications will be made.

This issue underscores the importance of cybersecurity for Canadian small businesses. This is why CFIB, together with its partners, launched the Cybersecurity Academy  – a free resource for Canadian SMEs providing training courses. Cybersecurity is a significant challenge for small and large businesses – and non-profit business associations are no exception. Please visit our Cybersecurity Academy to learn more.
