CFIB's EI campaign continues

The campaign to fight looming increases to EI premiums continues. We've been very successful in getting our message across to the Newfoundland and Labrador members of parliament (MPs) via presentations and meetings.  Therefore, we followed these with a meeting with Senator Fabian Manning since he is playing an important role in the province due to the lack of conservative MPs.

As the son of a small business owner, Senator Manning was very interested in our presentation and understanding of our position. We also had a lengthy discussion on CPP and why our members don't support mandatory contributions to the CPP plan.

On August 16, 2010, the eve of Cupids 400th year celebration, CFIB presented to the Newfoundland and Labrador federal liberal caucus. The presentation was made at the Legacy Centre, which was officially opened during the celebration by Governor General Michaëlle Jean and Premier Danny Williams.

On behalf of CFIB members, we presented on the following issues:

  • the impact that rising employment insurance premiums will have on small business owners;
  • proposed changes to the Canada Pension Plan;
  • training in small business;
  • the Marine Atlantic ferry service; and
  • the federal credit card code of conduct.
