CFIB asks Feds/Ontario to provide relief to Goderich businesses

Following the destruction caused by a powerful tornado in Goderich, we have requested that the Federal government and the Province of Ontario provide additional flexibility to affected businesses in remitting payroll source deductions and sales taxes.

Many families and businesses in the Lake Huron community were devastated by the powerful F-3 tornado that ripped through Goderich on August 21. At CFIB we were shocked and saddened by this catastrophic event.  To assist affected members in the region, we sent a letter to the Minister of National Revenue, Gail Shea, and the Ontario Minister of Revenue, Sophia Aggelonitis urging them to provide some flexibility to Goderich businesses in remitting payroll source deductions and sales taxes.  In particular, we have asked the Ministers to waive penalties and interest for late filings.

CFIB is happy to report that the Federal Government has acted on our recommendation to provide immediate relief to affected businesses in Goderich by allowing you to "apply to the CRA to have interest and/or penalties waived or cancelled in situations where they are unable to file a tax return and/or make a payment on time due to a natural disaster or other extraordinary circumstances beyond their control." For more information check out CRA's Announcement  on their website.
