Canada Post rates going up as of March 31, 2014!

As part of Canada Post’s new Five-Point Action Plan announced in December 2013, small businesses will now pay a pretty penny in extra postage, as of March 31st. The recent price hikes will have a huge impact on the majority of small businesses across Canada – 98% of which still depend on sending/receiving letter mail every month.

Do you sell lottery tickets? New tax rules will affect your bottom line!

Effective January 1, 2014, CRA changed its administrative position on bulletin IT-404R "Payments to Lottery Ticket Vendors", from March 31, 1981. The change indicates that any lottery retailers who are awarded a prize in relation to selling a winning lottery ticket must now declare these prizes as business income, thus making them taxable. Prior to this change, these monies were not taxed.
