Small and medium–sized businesses have benefited from recent advancements in telecommunications technology. This study examines SMEs’ use of telecommunications technology and their perspectives on the services they obtain from Canadian telecommunication providers.

Recent years have brought considerable changes to the Canadian telecommunications industry. Rapid technological progress was accompanied by regulatory initiatives intended at promoting competition and expanding services to under-served areas. Entrance of new competitors and consolidation, through the form of acquisitions, has marked the restructuring of the industry in Canada.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have so far benefited from the technological progress in telecommunications, becoming more efficient as they adapt the way they do business. It is in the interest of SMEs—and ultimately of Canada—that changes in the telecommunication service market sustain the availability, quality of service and level of price that supports business activity and economic momentum.
