As we approach the Xmas season, it is timely to review the highlights of the last few months. Despite some uncertainty, the Canadian economy has stayed the course. This is due in large part to the perseverance of entrepreneurs like you who steadfastly pursue their business goals.

In June 2012, the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) will undergo a major review. Seven provinces, the unions as well as the official opposition are pushing for a CPP hike in one form or another. Even the federal government’s 2011 budget leaves the door open to a potential hike in this job-killing payroll tax.

What a difference 40 years makes! Before CFIB, small- and medium-sized businesses were a mere afterthought in the minds of political leaders, government bureaucrats, bankers, educators, journalists and others. Now, in 2011, the entrepreneurial sector is considered a priority by decision makers, having grown to represent close to half of the Canadian economy.

Ants can move mountains, my mother used to say. Whether you are running a business or a leading lobbying organization like CFIB, you must persevere in the face of delays and keep a positive attitude despite obstacles. And that is just what has been called for in the battle against red tape that we have been leading for several years.

As this year draws to a close, it's time to take stock! This year has been an eventful one, to say the least. It was marked by an important victory on the EI file, intensive lobbying with regard to taxes and paper burden affecting small business, not to mention specific issues related to collective agreements as well as logbooks for automobile expenses mandated by Revenu Québec.

On December 7, I met with Quebec’s Minister of Finance, Raymond Bachand, to drop-off 7,685 petitions that our members sent in order to push for reduced payroll taxes. In our pre-budget presentation, not only did I inform him of your needs, but I also stressed the importance of putting money back into your pockets to ensure you share the same competitive advantages as businesses in neighbouring provinces.
