Help bring Tax Fairness for Islanders

Every year the PEI government gets to take advantage of inflation- wages go up, the cost of living goes up but tax brackets and the amount Islanders get to keep tax-free (the basic personal amount) stays the same.  It's time for government to protect taxpayers from inflation.

Islanders start paying tax before other Canadians

  • PEI has the lowest basic personal amount in the country- just $7,708. This means that Islanders start paying income taxes before any other Canadians.
  • On top of that, our lowest tax bracket pays the highest rate in the region.

Islanders suffer from "bracket creep"

  • Most provinces increase their basic personal amount and tax brackets every year. Not PEI.
  • Since 2002, the basic personal amount has only been increased twice for a total increase of just 4%. This is only a fraction of inflation or the increase in minimum wage.
  • Research has consistently shown that raising the basic personal amount does more to help the working poor than minimum wage increases.
